Step by step

How to fix it: Roku Remote Not Working.

Each step takes seconds. No original remote, no pairing code, no account required.

  1. Confirm the Roku is online

A non-responding remote is often a remote fault, not a TV fault. Check that your Roku still shows the home screen and is connected to Wi-Fi — the app needs that network link, not the broken remote.

  2. Install Remote for Roku

Download the app and open it on the same Wi-Fi as the Roku. It scans the local network for any device advertising ST: roku:ecp over SSDP.

  3. Connect without pairing

Tap your Roku in the list. ECP requires no pairing, so control is immediate even though the hardware remote has stopped responding.

  4. Test every key

Press the D-Pad directions, OK, HOME, BACK, VOL+, VOL-, and MUTE. Each command is an HTTP request on port 8060, so responsiveness depends only on Wi-Fi, not the failed remote.

Common questions

Roku Remote Not Working — your questions answered.

Why is my Roku remote not working even with fresh batteries?
Point-anywhere Roku remotes pair over Wi-Fi Direct, which can drop after a firmware update or power event. Remote for Roku sidesteps that link entirely by sending commands over your home network via ECP.
Will the iPhone remote work if the hardware remote is permanently dead?
Yes. The app is a complete replacement, not a companion. It controls the Roku independently over port 8060, so a permanently dead remote has no effect on it.
Does a non-working remote mean my Roku needs a factory reset?
Usually not. If the Roku still reaches Wi-Fi, Remote for Roku can drive it without any reset. A reset is only needed if the device itself is offline, which is a separate issue from the remote.
