  1. Identify which remote you are holding

    Look for a microphone or a pairing button. A plain remote with neither is almost certainly infrared and needs to be aimed. A remote with a voice button next to the purple directional pad is a Roku voice remote, and those often use wireless signals instead of infrared, so aiming is not required.

  2. Rule out the batteries before blaming the range

    Weak cells shorten infrared range long before they stop the remote outright, which is exactly the pattern people report as a range fault. Fit fresh cells and retest from the same spot before concluding anything.

  3. Check where the Roku physically sits

    A streaming stick tucked behind a panel or a player pushed into a closed cabinet is fighting the room. Infrared cannot reach it at all, and even a radio remote loses margin through dense furniture.

Infrared, radio and Wi-Fi are three different range problems

An infrared remote sends pulses of invisible light. That makes it cheap and reliable and also gives it two hard constraints: it needs an unobstructed path to the receiver window, and it fades with distance in the way any light source does. Every "I have to stand up and point it" complaint traces back to that.

A Roku voice remote is the other case. Roku says some voice remotes connect using wireless signals rather than infrared, so you do not have to point them directly at the device — which is why they still work with the player hidden behind the panel. Roku publishes no distance figure for either type, so treat any specific number you read elsewhere with suspicion; what is documented is the presence or absence of the line-of-sight requirement, not a range in metres.

Driving the Roku from your phone changes the question again. The command travels from the phone to the router and from the router to the Roku, so the reach of the remote becomes the reach of your Wi-Fi. In most homes that is dramatically further than either hardware remote, and it passes through walls without complaint.

Why walls stop infrared and not Wi-Fi

Infrared behaves like visible light, and the same things that would block a torch beam block it: a wall, a closed cabinet door, a person walking past. There is no partial credit — either the receiver sees the pulse or it does not.

Wi-Fi is a radio signal at a frequency chosen partly because it passes through ordinary building materials. It weakens through a brick wall, but it gets through, which is why a phone can control a Roku sitting inside a closed media cabinet in another room. The device does not need to see anything; it only needs to be on the network.

The new limit: your network, not your sightline

Once control runs over Wi-Fi the failure modes change. The app cannot reach a Roku if your phone has drifted onto a guest network, if a VPN profile is routing every packet out to the internet before it can reach the local device, or if a mesh system has placed the two devices on segments that do not talk to each other.

These are all fixable, and none of them is a distance problem. If control works in the living room and fails in the loft, check what network the phone is actually joined to up there before assuming range is the culprit — being handed to a different access point is far more common than being genuinely out of range.

How range differs by device and remote

The receiver window is on the TV chassis, usually along the bottom edge. It must be able to see the remote, so a soundbar parked in front of it is a genuine and very common cause of lost range.
Roku Streaming Stick behind the panel
The worst case for infrared, because the stick is hidden by design. Sticks are often bundled with a voice remote for exactly this reason; if yours has no voice button it is infrared, and the hidden device is the problem.
Roku Express
Small, light and typically sitting in front of the TV on the shelf, so its infrared receiver is exposed. Its main range enemy is the cable dragging it out of position.
Roku Ultra and Streambar
Usually bundled with a voice remote, so aim is often not required. If a cabinet blocks the infrared path anyway, control over Wi-Fi bypasses the question entirely.
