ROKU REMOTE RANGE

Roku Remote Range Falling Short? Control Over Wi-Fi.

IR remotes need line of sight and fade at distance. Remote for Roku rides your Wi-Fi, so range is the size of your network, not a few feet of aiming.

Works over Wi-Fi · no pairing · no original remote required

How the connection works

Built on the documented Roku protocol.

Remote for Roku speaks the same External Control Protocol every Roku ships with — no unofficial hacks, no pairing dance.

Step by step

How to fix it: Roku Remote Range.

Each step takes seconds. No original remote, no pairing code, no account required.

  1. Understand the range limit

IR remotes need direct aim and fade within a room; point-anywhere remotes use short-range Wi-Fi Direct. The app instead uses your whole Wi-Fi network for reach.

  2. Open Remote for Roku

On the same Wi-Fi, launch the app. It finds the Roku over SSDP regardless of where you are standing in the house.

  3. Connect with no aiming

Tap your Roku. Commands travel over the network on port 8060, so you never need line of sight to the device.

  4. Control from any room

As long as your iPhone has Wi-Fi coverage, the D-Pad, OK, HOME, BACK, and volume keys work, even through walls the IR remote could never beat.

Common questions

Roku Remote Range — your questions answered.

Why does my Roku remote stop working from across the room?
IR remotes need an unobstructed line to the device and weaken with distance, while point-anywhere remotes rely on short-range Wi-Fi Direct. Remote for Roku uses your home Wi-Fi instead, so distance within the network is not a barrier.
Can I control my Roku from another room with the app?
Yes. Because commands travel over Wi-Fi on port 8060, any room with network coverage works. There is no aiming and no line-of-sight requirement.
Does the app work through walls and closed cabinets?
Walls block infrared but not Wi-Fi, so a Roku inside a cabinet or behind a panel still responds. The only requirement is that both devices stay on the same network.
