Step by step

How to fix it: Reset Roku Remote.

Each step takes seconds. No original remote, no pairing code, no account required.

  1. Restart the Roku first

Unplug the Roku for five seconds and plug it back in. A clean boot clears many remote faults before any reset is needed.

  2. Reset a point-anywhere remote

Open the battery door, remove the batteries, then hold the pairing button for several seconds. Reinsert batteries and wait for the green light to settle.

  3. Control immediately with the app

While the remote re-pairs, open Remote for Roku on the same Wi-Fi. It connects over ECP with no pairing, so you are not stuck waiting.

  4. Keep the iPhone as backup

Even after a successful reset, the app stays ready. The D-Pad, OK, HOME, BACK, and volume keys are one tap away if the remote drops again.

Common questions

Reset Roku Remote — your questions answered.

How do I reset a Roku remote that stopped pairing?
Restart the Roku by unplugging it, then remove the remote's batteries and hold the pairing button for several seconds. Reinsert the batteries and let it re-pair, and use the app meanwhile so you keep control.
Do I have to reset the remote to use Remote for Roku?
No. The app is independent of the hardware remote's pairing. It controls the Roku over Wi-Fi via ECP whether or not the physical remote is reset.
My remote has no pairing button — how do I reset it?
Simple IR remotes have no pairing state to reset; they only need line of sight and good batteries. If an IR remote fails, Remote for Roku replaces it over Wi-Fi without any reset procedure.
