  1. Confirm the remote can pair at all

    Look for a voice button beside the purple directional pad. Only voice remotes pair with a player; Roku states that simple remotes have no pairing button and are ready to use the moment batteries go in. What Roku actually documents about the light

Roku's pairing instructions say to hold the pairing button until the status light flashes. That is the whole specification: a flash, during pairing. Roku does not name a colour in that context and does not say where on the remote the light sits, because it varies by model — on some it is on the front face, on others inside the battery compartment.

The "blinking green" phrasing is real-world observation rather than published fact, and it is consistent enough across models and forums to be useful. It is worth knowing the difference, though, because a page that states a colour as gospel will send you looking for a green light on a remote that flashes something else entirely.

Green lights on a Roku remote that have nothing to do with pairing

The Voice Remote Pro muddies this considerably. Its charging indicator flashes slowly while charging and turns solid when the battery is full — so a Pro on a charger is producing a blinking light that has no connection to pairing whatsoever. Someone following pairing instructions here will hold buttons for no reason while the remote quietly finishes charging.

The Pro also has a physical slider for hands-free voice, and Roku's own instruction is to move it to green.
